We are excited to announce the location for the 2017 MSRC Annual Conference. This year, the MSRC will host the 40th Annual conference at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA on October 24th and 25th. Keynote Speaker
Frank Salvatore Jr., RRT, FAARC, MBA
AARC Past President, Frank Salvatore Jr RRT, FAARC, MBA will be delivering this year's keynote lecture titled Respiratory Therapy: A Profession in Need of a Transformation. His presentation is a critical look at the changes in the healthcare system from 2009 to present that necessitates our need to change how we practice to ensure we add value to our patients outcomes.
Paul Nuccio, MS, RRT, FAARC
Paul Nuccio will be presenting on Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) or High-Flow Oxygen Therapy (HFOT): You Decide. This presentation describes how non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is a widely used and studied therapy option for the management of acute respiratory failure. High flow nasal cannula is rapidly growing in popularity and in supportive evidence. This presentation will review the current evidence in support of NIV, and discuss the current research evaluating HFNC and its role in the management of respiratory failure.
Robert Kacmarek, PhD., RRT
Robert Kacmarek, PhD., RRT, will be presenting the topic Patient-Ventilator synchrony and its Impact on Patient Outcome. This lecture will explore the causes and methods of correcting Pt-Vent asynchrony will be presented along with a review of the literature that indicate a negative effect of asynchrony on patient outcome describe.
Bill Galvin, RRT, CPFT, MS, FAARC, AE-C
Bill Galvin will be delivering two presentations this year. The first is titled, Patient Education is Taking on Critical Importance in Today's Health Care System. The presentation will address this critical importance as well as the implications it holds for the patient educator teaching different generations. Attend this session and learn teaching/ learning strategies to be effective and meaningful in communicating with your patients. The second presentation is Acquiring Your Credential: Success on the Board Exams. This lecture will assist those who are looking to successfully complete the NBRC credentialing process is perhaps one of the most important accomplishments for every aspiring RC professional. This presentation will address preparatory measures as well as strategies and techniques to be successful on the Therapist Multiple Choice and Clinical Simulation Examinations.
Gina Farquharson,
RRT-NPS, MS, MBA
Gina Farquharson will be delivering the presentation Respiratory Compromise: The Respiratory Therapist's Role Outside of the ICU. This presentation will discuss how to collaboratively develop programs to monitor and mitigate the incidence of patients at risk for respiratory compromise.
Patrick Dunne,
RRT, FAARC, MEd
Patrick Dunne will deliver a presentation titled, Refocusing on Health Care Reform: The Journey Continues. In spite of GOP efforts to repeal/replace the 2010 Affordable Care Act, CMS continues with the implementation of major payment reforms for hospital care. This presentation will review the key challenges facing all RT providers and the impact on the traditional practice of respiratory care.
Miguel Divo, MD
Dr. Miguel Divo is presenting COPD and the Role of Comorbidities. In this session he will be discussing why COPD is a complex chronic disease related in most cases to tobacco exposure. As the third leading cause of death, COPD rarely manifest in isolation, and in this session the aim is to explore the association with other chronic diseases and its implications.

2017 Keynote Speaker
Elizabeth Henske, MD
Dr. Elizabeth (Lisa) Henske is best known for her groundbreaking discovery that mutations in the TSC2 gene cause the sporadic form of lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). Dr Henske will be delivering her keynote presentation on the lung disease LAM.
Dean Hess, RRT, PhD, FAARC
Dean Hess, PhD., RRT, will be presenting the topic titled, Respiratory Care – A View of the Past with an Eye on the Future. This presentation will provide an overview of the respiratory care profession and some suggestions for future growth of the profession.
J Woodrow Weiss, MD
Dr. Woodrow will be presenting, Cardiovascular Consequences of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This presentation will provide an overview of the evidence supporting sleep apnea as a cause of arterial hypertension and sympathoexcitation.
Ray Ritz, BA, RRT
Ray Ritz will be presenting New Concepts in Lung Injury Prevention: Driving Pressure and Beyond. While limiting Plateau Pressure and avoiding large Tidal Volumes have been shown to limit Ventilator Induced Lung Injury, new understandings of other injury inducing mechanisms have lead to a more sophisticated approach to safer ventilator management. Driving Pressure, Lung Stress and Lung Strain will be reviewed as well as the possible impact of spontaneous breathing will be explored.
Mohamed El-Dib, MD
Dr. Mohamed El-Dib will be presenting Neonatal Encephalopathy- What every NICU RT should know! In this session he will discuss how neonatal encephalopathy affects 1-6 /1000 neonates in developed countries. Of these, approximately 15% to 20% die, and an additional 25% become disabled. It is usually associated with multisystem organ injury. Pulmonary complications of hypoxic ischemic injury include pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary hemorrhage, and respiratory distress syndrome. This lecture will describe the basics of neonatal encephalopathy and therapeutic hypothermia as the only standard treatment for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The talk will focus on changes in the respiratory system following hypoxic ischemic injury. Will also describe practical challenges in the respiratory care of neonates during therapeutic hypothermia and rewarming.
Martha DeSilva, RRT-NPS, RRT-ACCS, AE-C
Martha DeSilva will be presenting, Can you name that PFT? In this session you will review the different pulmonary function tests. The lecture will be very audience based where the audience will try to correctly interpret many different PFT results. Review of pulmonary function interpretation will be discussed.
Danielle Dwyer, MD
Dr. Danielle Dwyer is presenting An Algorithm for Management of Critical Asthma in Pediatric Patients Leads to Rapid Weaning of Albuterol Therapies and Reduces Length of Stay. In this session she will be discussing status asthmaticus is a common diagnosis among patients admitted to pediatric intensive care units. Standardized Clinical Assessment and Management Plans (SCAMP®) are quality improvement tools which aim to reduce practice variation, improve patient outcomes, and decreased unnecessary resource utilization. The Critical Asthma SCAMP is an iterative algorithm driven by an asthma severity score, which empowers bedside providers (respiratory therapists and nurses) to escalate and wean therapy. Implementation of the Critical Asthma SCAMP in our PICU was associated with more rapid spacing of albuterol therapy and decreased hospital length of stay.

2014 MSRC Conference
Sturbridge, MA
2014 marked the 37th Annual Conference
On September 29 and 30, 2014 the MSRC hosted it's 37th annual fall conference for local respiratory therapists. Speakers from around the area and from national organizations provided information to the 600+ attendees. Speakers included Dean Hess, Robert Kaczmarek, Ray Ritz, Shawna Strickland, and Charles Friderici. Topics included everything from neonatal respiratory conditions to emergency disaster preparedness, management of your department's budget, and many more topics.
